Two different warranties, not one

A resurfacing job has two separate warranties that get talked about as if they're the same thing. The manufacturer's warranty covers the finish material itself — for Diamond Brite, that's up to 10 years residential / 5 years commercial depending on the tier. The contractor's workmanship warranty covers the installation itself, and its length and terms are set by whoever did the work, not the finish manufacturer.

What's typically covered

Manufacturer warranties generally cover material defects — the finish failing in a way that's genuinely a product issue. Workmanship warranties cover installation problems: improper application, bonding failures, and similar issues traceable to how the job was done rather than the material itself.

What commonly voids a warranty

Improper water chemistry is the most common reason a finish warranty claim gets denied — chronic low pH, high chlorine, or poor calcium balance can etch or stain a finish in a way manufacturers explicitly exclude from coverage, because it's a maintenance failure, not a material one. This is exactly why the startup/curing period (covered in our resurfacing timeline guide) and ongoing professional maintenance afterward aren't optional extras — they're what keeps the warranty you paid for actually valid.

How to verify a warranty is real

  • Get the manufacturer's warranty document directly, not just a verbal mention of a warranty period
  • Get the contractor's workmanship warranty in writing, separately, with a specific term length
  • Ask directly what voids each warranty — a contractor who can explain this clearly has done this before
  • Confirm the contractor is still in business / reachable — a warranty is only as good as the company standing behind it
