What CPO actually is
Certified Pool Operator (CPO®) is a credential issued through the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA), accepted by health departments nationwide, including Florida DOH. It's the standard qualification for someone responsible for maintaining a public or semi-public pool's water quality and safety.
Who's actually required to have one
Florida DOH expects a certified, accountable operator for most staffed public and semi-public pools — in practice, whoever is actually maintaining the water chemistry and safety of a commercial pool is expected to hold the certification, whether that's your own maintenance staff or your contracted service provider's technician.
What the course covers
CPO training runs a minimum of 16 hours (commonly split as a self-paced online portion plus a live review session before the exam, or a full in-person course) and covers pool water calculations, filtration and circulation systems, and water chemistry — balancing and testing. The course has to be approved and nationally recognized to count toward Florida's requirement.
What it costs
Pricing varies by provider and format (online vs. in-person, self-paced vs. instructor-led), but expect roughly $300–$450 for the course and exam. Certification is valid for five years before renewal is required.
What it's actually worth in pay
Be skeptical of any single salary number here — sources vary enormously depending on whether they're pricing a dedicated "pool operator" role or a broader "aquatics/pool operations manager" title. Realistic dedicated pool-operator pay in Florida tends to land somewhere in the $30,000–$50,000/year range, with broader operations-management roles reported higher. The certification itself is a requirement to hold certain roles, not a guarantee of a specific salary.
The real decision for a board or property manager
Training and certifying in-house staff means ongoing renewal, coverage gaps when that person is out or leaves, and liability sitting on your association directly. Contracting a service whose technicians are already CPO Licensed — which ours are — hands that accountability and continuity to someone whose job is already to maintain it.
